Encountering God at Vesuvius

Today we visited Mount Vesuvius and wow some place – all too glad it was dormant!

In looking at the mountain and into the crater one couldn’t help but think of the incredible energy that blew it’s top and forced thousands, indeed millions, of tons of material up into the air and displaced in on the surrounding countryside.

Then looking around the outside and inner rim of that vast gaping chasm of a crater and observing that there were a number of small plants growing and in flower.

Then lifting the eyes across and looking around at all the visitors, hundreds of them, each throbbing with life and energy (you needed it to get to that point!), yet each one dwarfed by the size of the crater and yet – and yet, each one made in the image and likeness of God, the God who created the incredible power of a volcano and who gives life to the little plants growing within its borders.

What a mighty – no, almighty, awesome and amazing God we serve! He spoke and created. He speaks and sustains and it is in Him that we live and move and have our being!
